Lee Yew Chyuan

Branding Consultant & Graphic Designer at Leadlab
Part-time Lecturer at Sunway College Ipoh
Years with us: 6+

When I first started, I was guided by Teacher Lim and Teacher Chan whom in my opinion are some of the most patient teachers I’ve ever met. I do not have any art education prior to this, so basically, I know nothing about the principles of art, media, and techniques. I was afraid of making mistakes, but they gave me ample guidance and time, together with words of encouragement when I wasn’t performing well, so I’m grateful for them.

When I proceeded to the later stages, Teacher Ong was the one I met the most and she is one of my main inspirations to pursue graphic design. She was very strict in her teaching, and she helped me understand that in whatever we work with we need to constantly improve and strive for greater heights. What’s even better is that I’m also able to join Teacher Ong and Mr.Yip on art trips all around the world such as HK and Shenzhen, attending exhibitions and getting exposure first-hand on the global trends in art and design.

Later in my studies and career, I was privileged to be guided on how to run a design business in Malaysia, and to lecture in Sunway College, Ipoh. My team at LeadLab also aims to bring positive impact to the community around us. We have had the luxury to be able to work with inspiring local brands such as Ching Han Guan biscuits who had been established more than 70 years ago, and the overall reception has been overwhelming. As the border reopens, we are also planning to attend and participate in more exhibitions and design conferences outside Malaysia.

My learning experience with MAKERS (previously ULCC) was inspiring and amazing, it provided me a platform to explore and experiment with various media and materials. I was also trained to be creative and organized at the same time. I think it is important to have these two qualities when one works in creative industry (or practice arts).

Throughout my journey, they do not just teach me to be skillful in various media, my teachers did not limit my imagination and wildest ideas, they encourage me by helping me put up pieces by pieces. They also make sure I am always organised and clean while creating art pieces. Although it seems to be a little unrelated, but as I took art further as my studies and career I realised how important it is to master both.

It really allows me to interpret my creativity into artworks easier and in a more efficient pace without making a mess in the process. I would like to thank ULCC, trained and prepared me in facing challenges at work between meeting deadlines and being able to implement things aesthetically as well as commercially.

Ms Ong inspired me a lot in my art journey especially encouraged me to pursue my studies in the formal art college. Makers Arts Centre has provided a strong fundamental in drawing and painting techniques which allow me to cope with the foundation semester easily. I like their syllabus involving different medium for the students to explore and experiment. This is really important in nourishing my interest in art and developing the sense of aesthetic throughout the years.
